Let Honolulu Vote Update 3-11-07

Aloha all - A quick update. Last Sunday Paul Smith and Bud Ebel collected signatures at McCoy Pavilion, in Ala Moana Park. And Bob Kessler collected signatures at the Handcrafters Fair at Kaka'ako Park. Some success at both places.

During the week we received a bunch of signatures from Janell Israel, who is collecting in her office at 1585 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 1604. Mahalo, Janell. By the way, Janell Israel owns a financial advisor service. Her office information also is posted on our web site, LETHONOLULUVOTE.ORG.

Next Saturday morning, March 17, Bob Kessler will be collecting signatures in the parking lot at the Kapiolani Community College Farmer's Market. The hours will be 7:30 to 11AM. Send your friends down to sign. And come down yourself - this is a wonderful Farmer's Market.

A reminder that each Monday either Paul Smith or Bob Kessler will be calling in to the Rick Hamada show sometime during the 7AM hour to discuss LHV. Rick is on KHVH, 830 on the AM dial. He has invited us to call in weekly with an update. By the way, stick around for Rick's 8AM hour as well. Each Monday he interviews his Mom from 8 to 8:30AM, and she is one sharp lady.

If we're going to give Rick Hamada an update, that means we have to hear from you. Please try to give us weekly updates either by email or by phone.

On the down side, our interview with Mike Buck on the program 'Community Matters' isn't available yet on the KHVH web site. But keep checking at KHVH830AM.COM. Click on 'LINKS' then on 'TOWNPODCAST'. The podcast should be posted soon.

Remember our milestones. Even though we're trying to get our initiative on the 2008 General Election ballot, we really want enough signatures by this summer to influence this year's City budget deliberations. That means we want the Council to know we're going to get on the ballot! So we have to collect those signatures NOW!

And don't forget that Paul Smith and Bob Kessler are available to speak to your groups to explain what we're doing -- and why. We're all just going to keep being worn down by taxes until someone changes the City Charter to empower Oahu's voters on tax issues. We're happy to explain that to anyone who will listen.

Thank you all for your dedication and help. Without you, none of this is possible.

Let Honolulu Vote Update

Aloha all - Time to share some LET HONOLULU VOTE (LHV) news with all of you and to ask for a little feedback.

TV STARS? Paul Smith and I were interviewed by Malia Zimmerman, of Hawaii Reporter, for her Olelo television program News Behind the News. It will air next Monday, February 19, at 6PM on Channel 54. Malia's program will give us some valuable visibility. And the program will include some information that may help you explain to people what we're doing and why. The program schedule also can be found on our website.

I invite you to visit Malia's website, HAWAIIREPORTER.COM. Malia provides an excellent news source and has generously posted an LHV link on her website.

SIGNATURE COLLECTION EVENTS. Speaking of websites, we now plan to post signature collection events on our website, LETHNONOLULUVOTE.ORG. We want people to know where they can go to sign our petition. So when you schedule a signature collection event at a local mall or merchant, or even your church or social group, let us know and we'll post it. We'll also post the name and location of malls and stores that cooperate with us. That recognition may bring them more business, and may give you more leverage when you're asking for permission to collect on their premises.

Please remember, when a mall or store lets you collect, be considerate of vehicles and customers. We don't want to interfere with traffic flow - we want to be courteous guests who will be invited back again.

Events to be posted on the website should be passed along to Paul Smith, at lethonoluluvote@aol.com.

PETITION KITS. We have distributed more than 30 petition kits, which include petition forms, instructions and explanations, a table showing recent tax increases, volunteer cards, bumper stickers and voter registration forms. If any of you need more supplies, or have recruited volunteers who need supplies, let me know. I can be reached at 922-6188, or 381-4799.

ROAD SHOW. Please remember that both Paul Smith and I are available to address your groups to explain our effort.

MILESTONES. We won't be able to get our initiative on the ballot until November 2008. But the City Budget process occurs this summer. If by June we have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, that will send a powerful message to the City Administration and the City Council. So I encourage each of you to collect, collect, collect.

HOW ARE WE DOING? We often get asked how many signatures we've collected so far. So we need occasional feedback from each of you to let us know how you're doing. And if there's something we can do to help you. Call us or email us occasionally with updates.

Mahalo to all of you for your help.

University of Hawaii Professor Daniel W. Tuttle - One of My Heroes

Celebrating the Life of University of Hawaii Professor Daniel W. Tuttle - One of My Heroes

By Sen. Sam Slom, 12/29/2006 2:54:49 PM
Professor Daniel W. Tuttle courtesy of University of Hawaii Social Sciences Department

I mourn the death of University of Hawaii Professor Daniel W. Tuttle (December 23), but I celebrate his life. He was one of my role models and heroes.

Though he never sought it, Dan deserved much more recognition and gratitude, both from the University of Hawaii and the community than he was accorded. He also served with distinction with the Hawaii Education Association. He reported accurately and honestly on politics, but never played it. He was always professional, positive and helpful.

I concur with Midweek's political columnist Dan Boylan who said of Tuttle, "He was just way ahead of his time" referring to Dan's pioneering efforts in political polling and analysis.

Honolulu Remembers - Never Forget 9-11

Celebrate Your Freedom!

Mayor Mufi Hannemann is inviting the government officials and the public to join in the "Honolulu Remembers … Never Forget" candlelight march in memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This is the event that honors police, fire, emergency medical personnel and members of the armed forces who performed heroically on that fateful day five years ago.

After that the march will proceed back up Punchbowl Street and end at Honolulu Hale near the eternal flame for the conclusion of the observance. Parking will be available at the municipal lot on Alapai Street.

Patriot Day - September 11, 2006

On September 11, 2001, thousands of people died as a result of horrific terrorist attacks on this country. On December 18th, 2001, Congress, by a joint resolution, designated September 11 as Patriot Day, in honor of the victims and heroes of that day. The joint resolution requests that the President issue a proclamation each year calling upon citizens to mark the day with a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 AM eastern daylight time, the moment when the first attack occurred, and with appropriate ceremonies, services, activities and the flying of the United States flag at half-staff.

For additional information about Patriot Day, please visit our web site, www.americanflags.org, click on News and Notes, and then click Half-Staffing Info. You can also reach us via phonem at (412) 261-1776

PAYCHECKS HAWAII endorses Congressman Ed Case for U.S. Senate

Today, PAYCHECKS HAWAII announces its endorsement of Democrat Congressman Ed Case, for the United States Senate. It is the first of several contested primary endorsements to be made by PAYCHECKS HAWAII.

PAYCHECKS HAWAII spokeman, JS Services business owner Jack Schneider, said, "While the majority of our endorsements are made for state office, we believe that the race for U.S. Senate is critical to Hawaii-and to small business. Of all the candidates for this office this year, we believe the business community would best benefit from the election of Congressman Case. From the time he was in the State House of Representatives, Ed Case has been independent, energetic, accessible to small business, has worked hard for beneficial jobs legislation while advocating reforms to help lower the cost of doing business in Hawaii. We think he is the best candidate and join with other business organizations to urge employers, employees and all voters to support Ed Case for Senate."

PAYCHECKS HAWAII has several key functions: (1) each year after the state Legislature adjourns, it rates each of the 76 state legislators on their support for small business during the Session. Lawmakers are rated, regardless of political party, from #1, "most supportive and outspoken advocate for a better business climate," to #5, "least supportive of small business and an improved Hawaii business climate." (Ratings appear in the June issue of Small Business News and online at www.SmallBusinessHawaii.com.); (2) to identify, encourage, and support the candidacy of business-experienced candidates for elective office, regardless of political party; (3) to endorse candidates for office, regardless of political party affiliation and (4) to sponsor community meetings and debates between candidates in order to educate and inform the community regarding business and other important issues.

PAYCHECKS HAWAII, the private, independent, non-partisan political action affiliate of Small Business Hawaii (SBH), founded in 1984 by Lex Brodie and Sam Slom, is dedicated to improving Hawaii's business climate. PAYCHECKS HAWAII is politically active, in a non-partisan manner, every two years during Hawaii's state election cycle.
